Learning Review Weeks 5–6 (SSU)

Learning Review Procedure: Teachers facilitate discussion and ask for student participation on Core Bible Stories, Weekly Bible Verses, and songs. Choose students to answer verbally in class. No writing is required, except for notes taken on the lyrics pages. Discussion is designed so that students increase long-term memory of the main ideas and hide God’s Word in their hearts!

Weeks 5 and 6 Core Bible Story  (10 minutes)

Read Acts 8:26–35 — Philip Witnesses by the Spirit to the Ethiopian

Teacher begins by reading the Core Bible Story. Teacher then asks a student or entire class to summarize the Core Bible Story in four parts. Teacher writes responses on the board while facilitating discussion.

1) Philip meets an Ethiopian.
2) The man asks Philip to explain Scripture.
3) Prophet Isaiah describes Jesus as a sheep led to slaughter.
4) Philip tells the man the good news about Jesus.

Week 5 Bible Passage  (5 minutes)

1 John 4:9

Ask a student to read the Bible passage from page 132 and then to close their workbook. Discuss: What is the main idea of the passage?

Insert main idea here.

Choose one student to recite the passage from memory (may get help from classmates).
— or —
Students partner up and quiz each other on the passage. After a few minutes, choose one student to recite the passage to the class from memory.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

Week 5 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“Believe His Promises” (1 John 4:9)

Play the song in class. (CLICK HERE to open your Media Player)
Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 133 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: How does the song reflect the meaning of the passage?

The simple gospel message is that God sent His Son to demonstrate His love for us. Jesus came to be a man to save us from our sins. We can believe His promise that he paid the penalty of our sin so that we can be forgiven. He died for us so that we can live through him.

Week 5 Motto  (5 minutes)

“Believe His Promises” (1 John 4:9)

Note: Project this section of your Learning Review page (the Motto Buster Video) for your class to view and hear.

Play the Motto Buster Video in class to see who can guess the hidden motto first. Pause the video when students raise their hand to indicate they have solved the motto. Student states the motto out loud. If correct, student writes the motto on the board as the teacher facilitates discussion on the meaning of the motto.

That we might live through Him

Application: What does it mean that we might live through Him?

God wants one thing for His creation: to live through Jesus. We need a Savior because our sin separates us from God. We can now have a relationship with God because Jesus took our place and paid the penalty for our sins. Because Jesus saved us, we can now live eternally with God starting today! Jesus came to give us an abundant life both today and forever. We experience life at its fullest when we believe in Jesus and live for Him.

Week 6 Bible Passage  (5 minutes)

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Week 6 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“He’s Got Plans” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Play the song in class. (CLICK HERE to open your Media Player)
Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 140 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: The Lord has plans to prosper you and not to harm you. How can knowing that the Lord’s plans are never wrong help you to deal with challenges in your life?

When we experience challenges or disappointments, we are comforted to know that His plans are perfect. Sometimes God uses difficult situations to make us strong and stop us from acting in harmful ways. When we turn to God, He will use our challenges to prosper us and not to harm us. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Plans to give you hope and a future

Application: What does it mean to you that the Lord has plans to give you a hope and a future?

The Lord’s ways and His thoughts are higher than ours. We should trust the plans of the Lord, even if they are difficult to understand. We can trust that we have a hope and a future because God loves us and He wants the best for us. His plans are eternal and His purposes stand firm forever!
