Learning Review Weeks 5–6 (SSP)

Learning Review Procedure: Teachers facilitate discussion and ask for student participation on Core Bible Stories, Weekly Bible Verses, and songs. Choose students to answer verbally in class. No writing is required, except for notes taken on the lyrics pages. Discussion is designed so that students increase long-term memory of the main ideas and hide God’s Word in their hearts!

Weeks 5 and 6 Core Bible Story  (10 minutes)

Read Luke 7:36–50 — The Parable of Two Debtors

Teacher helps students to summarize Core Bible Story by asking the following questions:
1) Who did the Pharisee invite to his house? Who else showed up?
2) Why did the sinful woman come to see Jesus? What did she do to Jesus?
3) What did the Pharisee think about what he saw?
4) What did Jesus say about the two debtors?
5) Why was the woman crying?
6) Why didn’t the Pharisee appreciate Jesus and the forgiveness he offered?
7) What did Jesus mean when he said, “…he who has been forgiven little loves little.”

1) Jesus; a sinful woman
2) The sinful woman believed Jesus could change her life. She weeped, wet His feet with tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
3) He thought if Jesus were a real prophet that he wouldn’t be letting a sinner touch him. He looked down on the woman and didn’t think she deserved mercy.
4) One owed a lot, and the other owed a little. The moneylender canceled (forgave) their debts. The one who owed the most, loved the moneylender the most.
5) The woman was crying because she was sorry for her past, loved Jesus, and showed joy for being forgiven.
6) The Pharisee considered himself a good person and did not think he needed forgiveness.
7) If you don’t think you are a sinner, then you won’t see your need for forgiveness. When you are aware of your sin, then you are more grateful for being forgiven.

Week 5 Bible Passage  (5 minutes)

Psalm 32:1–2

Ask a student to read the Bible passage from page 132 and then to close their workbook. Discuss: What is the main idea of the passage?

INSERT MAIN IDEA HERE

Choose one student to recite the passage from memory (may get help from classmates).
— or —
Students partner up and quiz each other on the passage. After a few minutes, choose one student to recite the passage to the class from memory.

Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.

Week 5 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“Back on the Lead Lap” (Psalm 32:1–2)

Play the song in class. (CLICK HERE to open your Media Player)
Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 133 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: How does the song reflect the meaning of the passage?

Hiding our sin keeps us from receiving forgiveness. God wants to bless us and not hold our sin against us. We can get “back on the lead lap” when we are honest before God and confess our sins to Him.

Week 5 Motto  (5 minutes)

“Back on the Lead Lap” (Psalm 32:1–2)

Note: Project this section of your Learning Review page (the Motto Buster Video) for your class to view and hear.

Play the Motto Buster Video in class to see who can guess the hidden motto first. Pause the video when students raise their hand to indicate they have solved the motto. Student states the motto out loud. If correct, student writes the motto on the board as the teacher facilitates discussion on the meaning of the motto.

Blessed is he whose sins are forgiven

Application: How are we blessed when our sins are forgiven?

Forgiveness puts us right with God. It lets us start over with a new chance to please Him. We are blessed with peace when we are forgiven.

Week 6 Bible Passage  (5 minutes)

Ephesians 1:7–8

Week 6 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“New Set of Wheels” (Ephesians 1:7–8)

Discuss: What does it mean to live God’s way right?

Because Christ died for our sins, we don’t have to be stuck in our sin. Instead, because God lavished his grace on us, we get a new start.

Week 6 Motto  (5 minutes)

Redemption through His blood

Application: What does it mean that we have redemption through his blood?

When Jesus redeemed us, he paid the price of our sin with his own life. Because Jesus died and shed his blood, we no longer receive the penalty of our sin. We are saved.
