Learning Review Weeks 5–6 (GDC)

Learning Review Procedure: Teachers facilitate discussion and ask for student participation on Core Bible Stories, Weekly Bible Verses, and songs. Choose students to answer verbally in class. No writing is required, except for notes taken on the lyrics pages. Discussion is designed so that students increase long-term memory of the main ideas and hide God’s Word in their hearts!

Weeks 5 and 6 Core Bible Story  (10 minutes)

Read John 4:1-14 — Jesus Tells a Samaritan Woman about Eternal Life

Teacher begins by reading the Core Bible Story (Parts I and II). Teacher highlights key points of the story and facilitates discussion with the following questions:
1) Where was Jesus sitting and why did he stop there?
2) Who did Jesus meet and what did he ask her for?
3) What did Jesus really want?
4) Why did the woman seem surprised when Jesus spoke to her?
5) Who and what did the woman not know?
6) How is living (spiritual) water different than physical water?

1) Jesus was sitting by a well, because he was tired and thirsty from his journey.
2) Jesus meets a Samaritan woman and asks her to give him a drink of water.
3) Jesus wanted her to see that He was God’s Son and know the difference between physical water and living (spiritual) water.
4) The Samaritan woman knew that Jews did not associate with Samaritans.
5) The woman did not know that the Son of God was speaking to her, and that He was bringing the gift of God to the world.
6) Physical water quenches a thirst only for a short time. Living water represents eternal life with Jesus. Whoever drinks of living water will never thirst again. One must work daily to obtain physical water by drawing it from a well, but living water is a gift of a permanent spring within the person. Only Jesus can quench the spiritual thirst of man.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Week 5 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“Come to the Well” (John 4:13–14)

Play the song in class. (CLICK HERE to open your Media Player)
Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 133 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: How does the song reflect the meaning of the passage?

Jesus asks us to come to Him to receive eternal life. Only Jesus can quench man’s thirst to get right with God. “Come to the Well” is an invitation to put our faith in Jesus and have our spiritual thirst quenched so that we’ll never thirst again.

Week 5 Motto  (5 minutes)

“Come to the Well” (John 4:13–14)

Note: Project this section of your Learning Review page (the Motto Buster Video) for your class to view and hear.

Play the Motto Buster Video in class to see who can guess the hidden motto first. Pause the video when students raise their hand to indicate they have solved the motto. Student states the motto out loud. If correct, student writes the motto on the board as the teacher facilitates discussion on the meaning of the motto.

A spring of water welling up to eternal life

Application: In order to get water from a well, one lowers a bucket and then hauls up the container every time water is needed. In contrast, the water Jesus promises will become a permanent spring within the person. Jesus shows us that salvation is a gift and not kept or obtained through works. Jesus promises us a spring of water welling up to eternal life. What does it mean that the spring of water welling up to eternal life will quench our thirst?

Most of the things we pursue on earth are attempts to fill the natural human longing for God. Our ultimate purpose as created beings is to know, serve, and worship our Creator. We can finally have rest in Jesus when we put our trust in Him, instead of trying to fill this longing with material things and works.

Week 6 Bible Passage  (5 minutes)

1 John 4:10

Ask a student to read the Bible passage from page 139 and then to close their workbook. Discuss: What is the main idea of the passage?

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Week 6 Scripture Song  (5 minutes)

“This is Love” (1 John 4:10)

Play the song in class. (CLICK HERE to open your Media Player)
Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 140 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: How does the song reflect the meaning of the passage?

Real love is measured by how much God loved us, not by how much we loved God. God showed us what love is when he sacrificed His only son to set us free from the punishment of sin so that we could have eternal life. Even when we turned away from God in disobedience, God still loved us. There is no greater love than His love.

That He loved us and sent his son

Application: Do we receive eternal life through our love for God, or through His love for us?

We absolutely receive eternal life through God’s love for us. Though it is necessary for us to love God and put our faith in Christ to receive eternal life, we must remember that we would not even have this opportunity if God didn’t first pour out His love for us. God loved us first—by giving us His Son—and loved us much more than we could ever love Him.
